Getting names right in emails

I built shared name-cleaning rules for Python, JavaScript, and Clay so greetings stayed consistent.

The workflow

A simplified view of the work, with client information removed.

The problem

Simple splitting broke compound names and initials. Different tools also produced different greetings from the same input.

My contribution

  • Kept the original identity names separate from greeting fields.
  • Handled accents, compound names, initials, and missing values.
  • Made the same rules available in local scripts and Clay formulas.

Evidence & scope

I tested the rules on synthetic names and checked that Clay and the local scripts returned the same results.

What came out of it

Consistent greeting names across the stack.

The same input produced the same greeting across tools, with a fallback when the name could not be used reliably.
